Welcome to SBYMA
Santa Barbara Youth Music Academy is an energetic academic environment that provides a full musical experience to youth in a fun, safe and ever-changing framework of musical styles and performance venues. We utilize tailored teaching and performance models that naturally unite Santa Barbara youth from all cultures and backgrounds in an environment that ignites a desire to learn. We are a group of musicians, teachers, mentors and engaged parental and community volunteers that encourage every child to focus on their own value and untapped potential through music. We prepare our students with an opportunity to develop skills that will help them successfully pursue and play music in college and throughout life.
The collaborative skills of working with other youth musically, under the direction and mentoring of experienced, caring but firm musical professionals provides the discipline. Playing in a band in front of live local audiences provides the incentive.

Year-Round Band Programs
SBYMA offers an ever-expanding selection of classes and music styles. Our core teaching strength is building , developing and directing bands and ensembles. Our band/ensemble teaching model consists of weekly directed band practices, live performances and multi-band showcases at local venues. We recommend that most student take private lessons on the instrument of his/her choice as they grow into their role as a musician and as a member of a band. If a student does not take instrument-focused private lessons from our teachers, we suggest they take private lessons elsewhere. We will provide a list of local teachers and what instruments they teach. Band or Choir lessons are an hour long and we suggest one lesson per week for a minimum of 12 weeks. Private lessons are 1/2 hour long and usually taught once per week We currently offer private instruction on guitar, bass, piano, drums, string, wind and voice instruments. Yes, voice is an instrument.
Jazz Combo Workshop
For over 20 years, this hands-on forum offers an opportunity for players of various instruments to learn the ropes of participating in an intimate jazz combo. Appropriate for newcomers to jazz, this class requires that you are not a beginner on your instrument, but have mastered basic techniques of playing and reading music. Improvisation, soloing, accompanying & 'grooving' are some of the many things covered as you learn how to fill your role in a cohesive ensemble. JCW recently completed a Fall 2014 term with a very fun concert benefiting the SB Youth Music Academy Scholarship Fund.
Next session begins Tuesdays, January 13th-March 24th, 2015, 7:00 p.m. at the Free Methodist Church, 1435 Cliff Dr., Santa Barbara, CA, 93109.
Voices On! is brand new for 2015. Voices On! is a unique vocal ensemble exploring the possibilities of solo singing, harmonizing, vocal percussion, "voicetrumental", a cappella and combo integration. This class focuses on non-traditional choir settings with fresh, creative material unlike any other vocal program around. Those who love to sing & swing, and who like to do something that is not run-of-the mill will love this approach!
A joint concert with the JCW is planned for March 17th at the Free Methodist Church. Begins Tuesdays, January 20th-March 24th, 2015, 6:00 p.m. at the Free Methodist Church, 1435 Cliff Dr., Santa Barbara, CA, 93109.
